Today Dundrum is a suburb of Dublin, but back in the 18th century it was a town in its own right. Part of the ground associated with the church dates from the 6th century, while a castle was built in the latter part of the 12th century. On Thursday 3rd November 1842, at the instigation of Mr C Featherstone, a race meeting took place on a course a mile from the town at Mureen, the seat of local MP Manners McKay. The pretty course was packed with fashionable company to witness Arbitration win the Sweepstake for Mr E Dycer, beating Merrylegs and Warwick. The principal race of the day was the Stewards Sweepstake which went to Wasp owned by Captain Hilliard, overcoming the persistent challenge of Vixen. There are no further records of meetings of note taking place in the town. |
